Got Milk? Got Milk.

Changing diets, rapid urbanization and increases in consumer spending mean that by 2020 global demand for milk is forecast to grow by more than 100 billion liters. Much of this increased demand is expected to come from China, where current consumption levels of 11 liters per year are less than a third of the figure for Korea and Japan, and well below the 100+ liters consumed by many Western nations. Despite its modest consumption of dairy products, China is one of the world’s largest importers of milk and milk products. This has led to aggressive steps by the Chinese to establish a home-grown dairy industry. Some of the biggest benefactors of this push for “independence from foreign milk” have been dairy cattle breeders in Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay, the only nations licensed to export dairy cattle to China. Australia, in particular, has benefitted enormously. According to Global Trade Information Services, China spent $250 million on 100,000 heifers in 2011, with Australia providing more than half the herd. This year that number is expected to increase to 85 per cent.
